An Update from the Manager
June 20, 2020
It has all been happening here at Neighbourhood Support, some of it planned, some unplanned, and as ever some of our well thought out plans have had to change! We have learnt several things from our experiences in the last few months: you can’t predict the unpredictable, and how we, as a community, should better value our neighbourhoods.
As a small organisation, with 1.5 full time staff currently operating across the region, we would never have chosen to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic at the same time as transitioning to a regional organisation and establishing a regional online database. You have guessed correctly, we have worked some long hours to complete the tasks and support Groups. Looking forward, we shall be: recruiting a new coordinator for Marlborough in the very near future;bedding in the new organisation; looking forward to spending more time out and about working with Neighbourhood Groups.
We know that many of you have been doing outstanding jobs, keeping in touch with neighbours, organising social events and ensuring that people have shopping, so the team here would really like to thank you for what you have done. We know that if our community was not so strong, the outcome would have been very different during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We worked closely with civil defence in Nelson and Tasman during the response phase of the pandemic, and we know that the community sector was the only sector with the knowledge right down on the ground as to who vulnerable people were and which community organisations could provide support to people. Our
Many people, during lockdown had time to realise that our community connections were under-valued and they are keen to see them more valued in our society. We would like to work with neighbourhoods to continue to build resilience, both in terms of better planning for the next emergency event, and to provide better support to more vulnerable people at a local level. If you have ideas for neighbourhood initiatives on these topics and you would like support from us to get them off-the-ground, please do get in touch with us.
